Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in October 2023 were an estimated 10.1 million metric tons (Mt), a 3.6% decrease from shipments in October 2022, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Of total blended tonnage reported in October 2023, 5.6 Mt (99%) was estimated to be portland-limestone cement (Type IL).
Shipments for the year through October totaled an estimated 90.8 Mt, a 2.9% decrease from those in the same period in 2022. The leading producing states for portland and blended cement were, in descending order, Missouri, Texas, California, Florida and Alabama. The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Georgia, in descending order) received 36.9% of October shipments.
Masonry cement shipments totaled an estimated 203,000 metric tons in October 2023, a 6.1% decrease from those in October 2022 and a 6.7% decrease from the five-year average in October (2018 – 2022). Shipments for the year through October totaled an estimated 2.0 Mt, a 5.4% decrease from those for the same period in 2022. The leading masonry cement-consuming states were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, California, Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee; these states received 60.5% of October shipments.
Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled an estimated 6.8 Mt in October 2023, a 10.2% decrease from production in the prior-year period. Production for the year through October totaled an estimated 63.1 Mt, a 4.5% decrease from the same period in 2022. The leading clinker-producing states were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Florida and Alabama.
